He Did (A Slightly Older Fiction Story I Wrote)
"Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today.", he said, grateful for the opportunity to shift things in his life. Sitting in the chair across from his interviewer he took in every moment. It was pleasant outside and this afforded him the perfect opportunity to get this change he desperately needed. Sitting outside at an outdoor table of a restaurant he answered every question asked him. "What are your skills? Where have you worked before? What are you passionate about?", asked the interviewer to start. John was curious about this homeless man he had heard so much about in the shelters and low to no income restaurants he'd frequented before. This man who sought to help when he was there. Cleaning floors, washing windows; so when he heard there was an outdoor table, he'd set up a time to meet with Paul.
It wasn't easy to track him down (since he never was in one place twice for long), but he did. Paul answered all his questions in honest and transparent ways he was surprised by. John knew little about him and wasn't sure what to expect, but when he showed up early for the meeting John knew there was something about him that would be more than adequate to help him with what he had in mind for Paul.
After a lengthy meeting (and some much needed food enjoyed by them both), John asked Paul the question that would change his life forever, "When can you start working?", to which Paul replied, "I don't have any clean clothes and a shower to clean up with. I don't know what I'll be doing, but if those aren't a problem for the job I can start right away.". Smiling at Paul's conscientiousness, John simply said, "That will not be a problem. As superintendent of the apartment building you will have an apartment of your own, and I'll give you clothes, and the basic necessities to get started.". Upon hearing this Paul began to tear up. "Thank you.", he said to John. "You can sleep and clean up in the apartment I have for you tonight, and we'll go over the paperwork tomorrow.", said John, leading him to the apartment building across the street; the very reason he was grateful to find a table outside at the very restaurant he did.
