An Unusual Work Day (A Slightly Older Satirical Fiction Story I Wrote)
Note About The Piece Below: In the industry I work in (Pest Control), we've had a running joke of sorts we'd sometimes say when an employee was acting strange. We'd say (jokingly): " Stop drinking the chemical.". This was written and submitted to a magazine with an audience in this industry. It was also written BOTH to raise awareness of safety AND as sort of a satirical "spooky" story for the Halloween season. Just sharing it for the two above reasons I wrote it. Have fun, and stay safe.
An Unusual Work Day
"In the heat of the day, my energy gave way. I reached for a container and began to drink. As I quickly drank and swallowed, then the taste hit me, and the effects soon after. In my exhaustion I looked again and realized it was the chemical bottle (it was low to no odor)! Fearful I hurried to a hospital, but it was too late. The effects of the amount taken was lethal and upon reaching the hospital I died in the parking lot in my work vehicle (battling the effects all the way there). Heat can be bad, but when you don't pay attention to containers and labels while you're dehydrated and thirsty, you pay a terrible price as I did.", Mark the technician said.
Shocked at the sight of this ghostly figure before him, he stopped, considered what he almost did and then made sure to get some water from the right container. "The fact that they weren't stored in better containers that were much more different and properly labeled didn't help either. ", added Mark before suddenly disappearing to the shock of the young man. The tech looked once more at his containers and realized he didn't have that problem (thankfully!); he just needed to get out of the heat for a while from his usual services in an unusual work day.
