Poetry In Real Time

        I discovered a section of submissions through a poetry group at one point that offered a paying opportunity to share thoughts on different news events (through a constructive lens) in poems. Below are two I recently wrote, submitted, and were rejected (obviously). Poetry (and other forms of expression as well) can help us process the world around us, something I believe is a God-given blessing.

         The first is about a man who was kidnapped in the 1950s and was safely found recently. And the other is about a girl who went missing after sleepwalking in the woods (unknown to her family) and was later found safe. These challenges were brutally difficult to write (since I have a hard time watching the news, and normally choose not to). I'm grateful for the opportunity regardless; it's been an immense help.

Home Again

What must it have felt like?

Where had you been?

All these years and I can't imagine,

imagine what you've been through,

where you've been to,

before coming home again.

How could have happened?

I only saw the headline;

still I'm glad your safe sir,

after decades of being kidnapped,

decades where you've made it home again .

To Wake Up

To wake up,

not knowing where you are,

a time I remembered,

an old friend who endured this;

that "this" though was different for you though.

To wake up,

not knowing where you are,

not knowing if you'd be safe,

or even found,

the dad in me cringes,

shutters to think you may not have,

grateful this wasn't the case.

To wake up,

found in time,

returned safe,

I'm sorry you had to go through that young lady;

welcome home.
