Little Whispers

"Don't do it. It will never work. You can't overcome this, and you never will. You aren't able to do this. This will always be who you are. You are nothing more than your failures and tragedies." These are little whispers (and unfortunately only a few). There are many, many more. Often times these little whispers can be personalized to each person, though there are universal examples as well that go beyond one or one types of people. These come from the voice of Shame. These little whispers that tend to destroy us..... until we learn to not listen.

I've known them too well most of my life. Like everyone I have made wrong choices, committed my sins even, but there's another side to the shame we encounter in life: it's the side we encounter from others. Before I continue however, I want to make something very clear, this is NOT about calling any one person or people out. This ISN'T about how awful things really are ONLY either, and this is NOT about focusing on anything that is truly unhealthy; it is ONLY about learning how to respond in a right and constructive way to it. For in life one of the things that tends to be pushed under the rug in our world today is simply how to deal with shame. Typically the way you deal with shame is to speak truth to it, "I am not that mistake.", "That is only a part of my journey."  "I am not that failure.", "That is only one mile on this road toward success that I am walking.", "What if I do succeed?",  "What if I am more than the trauma and the hardships that nearly destroyed me?". These are some examples of how we can face our shame, face our destruction.

I will never say we should ignore shame, or that we should pretend it isn't there; I will simply say that in those moments where we hear those little whispers of poison seeds seeking to infect our souls, we must search out the truth, grab hold of Hope (Jesus), and remember that even Jesus came to seek and to save those that are lost: us (Luke 19:10).
