Listened (An Older Fiction Story I Wrote)

It seemed like a great idea. “The more the merrier.”, were the words expressed. Pointing to a quick appearing opportunity, a smile came across his face and he added, “…and they’re large.”. Excitedly he rushed to the balloon vendor and enthusiastically paid for the much welcomed prize of being able to make his kids happy; little knowing how much pull these little zeppelins would soon reveal. As he was handed the large number of large balloons he began to walk proudly toward his waiting family, when suddenly a gust of wind on this airy day passed through. The helium filled balloons met their deliverance and they left with the wind, carrying the man high into the air in their hasty escape.  Air all but ambushed his hair as fear raced through his heart, terrifying his normally steady mind. Swinging back and forth he clutched the balloon strings with a deathgrip as he continued to gain altitude, screaming in a near paralyzing panic at his inability to be free from this terrible danger he now found himself in. His mind racing as he desperately sought a solution of any kind; none were found for this frightened father of three.

Flying farther and farther, shame joined with an already active and present fear as “what ifs?” attacked the man’s tormented soul. “What if I fall? What if I can’t hold on? What if my arms give out or they are injured beyond repair? What if I pass out and my family is left with no husband and dad? What if my friends don’t let me live this down?” . Over and over they raged against him in full battle taking him apart from within, quickly becoming a shell of himself. He was carried for miles and miles, screaming in the ascension until he heard voices nearby (for he thought himself too high to be heard). The gasps of alarm and screams of frightful concern quickly became known on a nearby cliff. People were sight seeing and caught this surprising moment in a normally peaceful outing. In his disarray he was unable to appreciate that he wasn’t out of reach of help needed.

In all the chaos within and without an audible voice suddenly spoke to him. "Jump!", came the thought to his mind, and in desperation to be free he listened. Falling fast, he had not considered the landing, only the liberating truth that he would get out of this terrible situation, and that was enough. Listening comes with it's unexpected rewards though, and this one happened to be a prepared park ranger nearby with a quick-inflating landing device. As the man fell, he landed right on it, bounced and gained altitude a little, then landed at the edge and rolled off. The ranger and the alert crowd of on-lookers ran to him, made sure he was unharmed, and lifted him to his feet.

Soon after, his wife and kids caught up with him, hugged him tight, and agreed on one thing: no more overly large balloons from vendors who didn't seem to know how to distribute them properly to begin with.
