In The Wind (An Older Fiction Story I Wrote)
Everything was a blur as the speedometer raced along with the car that was now travelling at unbelievable speeds down the road. Buildings and grass, people and what seemed endless seas of gray highway were near indistinguishable. It didn't phase this race car driver who learned to accept and own the fury of dangerous acceleration though as he sped down the route away from getting caught.
"Beyond remarkable" was the label he was given when his high speed skills were seen; still there was an inkling for something more that called to him. He couldn't put a finger on this desire that grew to an inferno in his soul. This riddle kept asking unanswerable questions of him, "What if there's more, and it's not what you think? What if you never find out this "itch" and how to fulfill it; will you live with that?" , and the strange puzzling questions would eat away at him until one day when it all changed.
He was with some new car developers who would show him a prototype of the fastest car they believed would reign supreme in both speed, handling, and the never before perfected ability to change color; not just color though but any pattern it came into close proximity with (even the tires)! The creative minds who developed and built this mechanical marvel would point him to it. He couldn't believe such an inspiring piece of work! The chameleon feature (as the creators called it) could be turned on or off. The riddle in him was suddenly answered. He knew he had to take it for a ride.
Knowing he'd wanna test drive it, they'd invite him to do so, unaware of how much he wanted something new to meet this longing for something different than just simply racing. As he accepted and stepped in, he was handed the key. The creators explained how to use the chameleon feature and then he was ready. The engine roared to life, the tires squealed, and a carelessly opened garage door was passed through at vicious speeds. The creators knew he wasn't coming back.
Police were called to the scene and the chase was on. Towns were sped through and overpasses owned as he continued on, fulfilling this new found release from circle tracks and restrained courses. Suddenly, he disappeared in the pursuit! Last spotted entering a tunnel he became invisible. This automotive anomaly was in chameleon mode and from there was never seen again.
For months he was sought after to no avail. Every so often though witnesses report a car disappearing and reappearing to authorities, and then he is gone....in the wind.
